Abstract
BACKGROUND The tauopathy inhibitor, davunetide shows sex-dependent efficacy in women suffering from progressive supranuclear palsy. Extending these findings to prodromal Alzheimer's disease, we submitted a double-blind, placebo-controlled, 12 weeks/16 weeks follow-up, davunetide clinical trial results in amnestic mild cognitive impairment (ClinicalTrials.gov ID NCT00422981), to a sex-dependent analysis. METHODS One hundred forty-four individuals, separated into eight groups (1:2 placebo-and 2 doses, 5 mg davunetide/daily or 15 mg davunetide/twice-daily, with matching placebo intranasal volumes), were evaluated. RESULTS Significant dose-dependent cognitive increases were observed in men compared to women with a test of delayed (12 ss) visual matching to the sample. In a test of semantic working memory and attention (digit span), women showed a significant low-dose placebo effect, ensuing in a high dose significant davunetide improvement, over the matched placebo. Correlating anxiety with cognition showed sex-opposing results, with women depicting significant anxiety correlations with delayed matching to sample. DISCUSSION In conclusion, sex-specific prodromal Alzheimer's drug development is encouraged, with davunetide playing a lead initiative role.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Transcranial direct stimulation (tDCS) targeted to the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) reduces food intake and hunger, but its effects on circulating factors are unclear. We assessed the effect of repeated administration of tDCS to the left DLPFC (L-DLPFC) on concentrations of pro/anti-inflammatory and appetitive hormone concentrations. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty-nine healthy adults with obesity (12 M; 42±11 y; BMI=39±8 kg/m2) received 3 consecutive inpatient sessions of either anodal or sham tDCS targeted to the L-DLPFC during a period of ad libitum food intake. Fasting plasma concentrations of IL-6, orexin, cortisol, TNF-α, IL-1β, ghrelin, PYY, and GLP-1 were measured before the initial and after the final tDCS sessions. RESULTS IL-6 (β=-0.92 pg/ml p=0.03) decreased in the anodal group compared with sham, even after adjusting for kcal intake; there were no changes in other hormones. Mean kcal intake was associated with higher IL-1β and ghrelin concentrations after the ad libitum period (β=0.00018 pg/ml/kcal, p=0.03; β=0.00011 pg/ml/kcal, p=0.02; respectively), but not differ by intervention groups. CONCLUSIONS IL-6 concentrations were reduced following anodal tDCS to the L-DLPFC independent of ad libitum intake. IL-6 concentrations reflect the inflammatory state of adiposity and may affect eating behavior and weight gain. These findings provide evidence of therapeutic benefit of tDCS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Low-grade systemic inflammation may be a key player in the immune activation that has been reported for mental health deterioration. We hypothesised that elevated serum levels of inflammatory cytokines increase neuroinflammation and exacerbate depressive symptoms. METHODS The participants were part of a cohort study for whom data was available for both 2015 and 2019. In 2015, blood samples were collected from 232 participants. Their depressive symptoms were assessed both 2015 and 2019 using the Centre for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) (n = 33). The multiplex immunoassay system (Luminex® 200) was used to measure the serum concentrations of IL-6, IL-10, IL-12, IL-17A and TNFα. Data were analysed using linear models with the level of significance considered to be p < 0.05. RESULTS After controlling for age, BMI, smoking and alcohol consumption, in 2015 the serum concentrations of IL-17A and TNFα in 2015 were significantly positively associated with the CES-D scores of women (standardised β (B) = .027, p < 0.01 and B = 0.26, p < 0.01, respectively). The serum concentrations of IL-17A and TNFα of men were significantly positively associated with the CES-D scores of 2019 (B = 0.62, p = 0.02 and B = 0.59, p = 0.02, respectively). CONCLUSIONS In this cross-sectional study, we found a significant positive correlation between the depressive symptoms and serum TNFα and IL-17A levels of women. In addition, our longitudinal findings suggest the possibility that TNFα and IL-17A could elevate the depressive symptoms of men.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cerebral mitochondrial and hemodynamic abnormalities have been implicated in Bipolar Disorder pathophysiology, likely contributing to neurometabolic vulnerability-leading to worsen clinical outcomes and mood instability. To investigate neurometabolic vulnerability in patients with BD, we combined multi-modal quantitative MRI assessment of cerebral oxygenation with acute administration of Methylene Blue, a neurometabolic/hemodynamic modulator acting on cerebral mitochondria. METHODS Fifteen euthymic patients with chronic BD-type 1, and fifteen age/gender-matched healthy controls underwent two separate MRI sessions in a single-blinded randomized cross-over design, each after intravenous infusion of either MB (0.5 mg/kg) or placebo. MRI-based measures of Cerebral Blood Flow and Oxygen Extraction Fraction were integrated to compute Cerebral Metabolic Rate of Oxygen in Frontal Lobe, Anterior Cingulate, and Hippocampus-implicated in BD neurometabolic pathophysiology. Inter-daily variation in mood rating was used to assess mood instability. RESULTS A decrease in global CBF and CMRO2 was observed after acutely administrating MB to all participants. Greater regional CMRO2 reductions were observed after MB, in patients compared to controls in FL (mean = -14.2 ± 19.5 % versus 2.3 ± 14.8 %), ACC (mean = -14.8 ± 23.7 % versus 2.4 ± 15.7 %). The effects on CMRO2 in those regions were primarily driven by patients with longer disease duration and higher mood instability. LIMITATIONS Sample size; medications potentially impacting on response to MB. CONCLUSIONS An altered neurometabolic response to MB, a mitochondrial/hemodynamic modulator, was observed in patients, supporting the hypothesis of vulnerability to neurometabolic stress in BD. Integrating quantitative imaging of cerebral oxygen metabolism with a mitochondrial-targeting pharmacological challenge could provide a novel biomarker of neurometabolic and cerebrovascular pathophysiology in BD.

Abstract
Weight stigma, racism, and sexism (social devaluation due to body weight, race or ethnicity, and sex or gender), have been linked to increased maladaptive eating behaviors; however, no research has investigated the unique associations between different forms of stigma and eating concurrently. We analyzed within-group (by race/ethnicity and sex) effects of different forms of stigma on maladaptive eating behaviors to test whether there is some unique relationship between weight stigma and maladaptive eating across identities. Additionally, we explored differences by racial/ethnic group and sex, as well as BMI category, in levels of reported weight stigma, racism, sexism, and maladaptive eating. Participants (N = 1051) were recruited so that there were approximately even numbers of participants identifying as Black (33.3%), Hispanic or Latino (32.8%), and White (33.9%). Overall, participants reported similar amounts of weight stigma by race/ethnicity and sex, but different levels of racism and sexism. Weight stigma, but not racism or sexism consistently predicted binge eating and eating to cope across groups, controlling for education, income, BMI, and age. Restricted dieting, however, was only predicted by weight stigma for Hispanic/Latino and Black men. These findings suggest that weight stigma is a unique predictor of maladaptive eating, even when considering the effects of racism and sexism. This study provides evidence of a more focused model of weight stigma and eating outcomes, rather than a more general model of the effect of stigma on eating outcomes due to overall stress. Future research should investigate when and why weight stigma drives restricted dieting, since this relationship seems strongest in men, going against many common inclinations about weight stigma.

Abstract
Sexual minoritized (SM) adults experience health disparities and report higher rates of trauma history compared to heterosexual adults. This scoping review synthesizes the extant literature that investigates associations between trauma and physical health among SM adults. It also describes research instruments utilized to assess trauma in relation to health outcomes among SM adults. We searched CINAHL, LGBT+ Life, PsycINFO, and PubMed to identify studies meeting inclusion criteria: peer-reviewed, English, assessed trauma as an independent variable, and assessed health behaviors or outcomes among SM adults. From 587 nonduplicate articles, 69 full texts were reviewed; 18 met criteria and were included in this review. To enhance rigor, we utilized the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis Scoping Reviews checklist. Most (n = 12) of the included studies were cross-sectional. Trauma was assessed 16 different ways, including 9 validated measures, in relation to 5 health behaviors and 17 health conditions. Trauma was operationalized by history of childhood sexual abuse, adverse childhood experiences, lifetime rape, current symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, and lifetime victimization among SM adults. All but one study found associations between trauma and one or more unfavorable health behaviors or outcomes. Studies used widely heterogeneous instruments to assess trauma, health, and SM identity. Greater specification and standardization of measurement is needed, along with contextualized assessments of trauma and its impact on health such as sexual minority stress-related victimization and resilience, and post-traumatic growth and recovery processes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES In light of the late stage of COVID-19 pandemic, the occurrence of persistent symptoms after COVID-19 infection has become more frequent. To date, there are no standardized treatments. Underlying mechanisms, risk and protective factors for severe persisting symptoms should be investigated to develop effective interventions. METHODS An online questionnaire was used to assess gender, presence of prior mental disorder, severity of COVID-19 infection, and social connectedness (SCS-R) to determine their influence on symptom severity of persisting symptoms. The sample used to examine risk and protective factors consisted of 693 participants. RESULTS The analysis revealed no significant gender differences for severity of persisting symptoms. However, prior mental health condition was associated with severity of persisting symptoms. Moreover, there was a positive association between symptom severity during COVID-19 infection and Post COVID 19. Social connectedness was found to be negatively associated with Post COVID 19 symptoms. Social connectedness was shown to be negatively associated with depressive symptoms and disordered self-organization. The symptoms of energy loss and concentration had the highest centrality. CONCLUSION The results of the study indicate that severity of post-covid symptoms is associated with higher levels of psychopathological symptoms and a lower level of social connectedness. In conclusion, social connectedness may be an important factor in the development of post-COVID symptoms and should be considered for future interventions. Abstract
BACKGROUND The arousal state has been demonstrated to be involved in the fundamental pathophysiological mechanism of sleep disturbances. Tai chi (TC) and repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) have been documented to alleviate sleep disturbances by interfering with different arousal components. It is reasonable to assume that combining TC and rTMS could induce synergistic and longer-lasting benefits for sleep disturbances. METHODS Thirty-eight older community-dwelling people were randomly assigned to one of three groups: TC plus rTMS (n = 12), TC alone (n = 13), and treat-as-usual (TAU) (n = 13). The interventions were conducted three times per week for 4 weeks for the two intervention groups. The primary outcome was the insomnia severity, while the secondary outcomes were the actigraphy-assessed sleep patterns, use of hypnotic medications, mood states, and quality of life. The mediator outcomes included self-reported somatic arousal and cognitive arousal as well as electroencephalogram (EEG)-assessed cortical arousal. The assessments were conducted at baseline (T0), post-intervention (T1), and 3-month follow-up (T2). RESULTS Significant improvements in the insomnia severity were observed in the TC plus rTMS group compared with the TAU group at T1 (Cohen's d = 1.62, p = 0.003) and T2 (Cohen's d = 1.97, p < 0.001). In contrast, significant improvements in the TC alone group were found only at T2 (Cohen's d = 1.03, p = 0.010) when compared with the TAU group. Significant interaction effects were noted on the actigraphy-assessed sleep efficiency (p = 0.015) and total sleep time (p = 0.004), depression (p = 0.003) and stress scores (p = 0.002), and mental function in relation to quality of life (p = 0.042). However, none of the mediators elucidated how combining TC and rTMS could improve the insomnia severity. CONCLUSION The research findings are expected to guide further clinical practice in the management of sleep disturbances among older adults using various interventions. Future studies are needed to unravel the underlying mechanism and optimize the protocol to maximize the therapeutic benefits.

Abstract
Background Sex and gender inequalities in ischemic heart diseases persist. Although ischemic heart disease is less common in women, they experience worse clinical outcomes and are less likely to receive guideline-recommended treatments. The primary scientific literature from which clinical guideline recommendations are derived may not have considered potential sex- and gender biases. This study aims to determine whether the literature cited in recent cardiovascular guidelines' clinical recommendations contain sex and gender biases. Methods We analysed publications cited in the 2019 European Society of Cardiology (ESC) guideline recommendations on chronic coronary syndromes, using a checklist to guide data extraction and evaluate the individual studies for sex- and gender-related aspects, such as inclusion/exclusion criteria, outcome measures, and demographic data reporting. To assess representation over time, the proportion of women participants in each study was computed and analysed using a beta regression model. We also examined the associations between women's representation, journal impact factor and author gender. Findings Among the 20 ESC recommendations on chronic coronary syndromes, four contained sex-related statements; we did not identify any gender-specific suggestions. The referenced literature upon which these recommendations were based consisted of 108 articles published between 1991 and 2019, encompassing more than 1.6 million study participants (26.8%; 432,284 women). Only three studies incorporated sex-sensitive designs; none were gender-specific. The term "gender" did not occur in 84% (n = 91/108) of the publications; when used, it was exclusively to denote biological sex. The proportion of women (assumed by investigators) among study participants fluctuated over time. Having a woman as first (odds ratio (OR) = 1.68, 95% CI: 1.19-2.39) or last author (OR = 2.28, 95% CI: 1.31-3.97), was significantly associated with having more women participants in the study. Interpretation The data underlying ESC guideline recommendations largely lack reporting of possible sex- and gender-specific aspects, and women are distinctly underrepresented. To what extent these recommendations apply to members of specific population groups who are not well-represented in the underlying evidence base remains unknown. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and global quality of life (QOL) in children and adolescents with Fontan physiology and identify key predictors influencing these outcomes. STUDY DESIGN Cross-sectional analysis of 73 children and adolescents enrolled in the Australia and New Zealand Fontan Registry aged 6-17 years, at least 12 months post-Fontan operation. Assessments included the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL) for HRQOL and a developmentally-tailored visual analogue scale (0-10) for global QOL, along with validated sociodemographic, clinical, psychological, relational, and parental measures. Clinical data were provided by the Australia and New Zealand Fontan Registry. RESULTS Participants (mean age: 11.5 ± 2.6 years, 62% male) reported lower overall HRQOL (P < .001), and lower scores across all HRQOL domains (all P < .0001), compared with normative data. Median global QOL score was 7.0 (IQR 5.8-8.0), with most participants (79%) rating their global QOL ≥6. Anxiety and depressive symptoms requiring clinical assessment were reported by 21% and 26% of participants, respectively. Age, sex, and perceived seriousness of congenital heart disease explained 15% of the variation in HRQOL scores, while depressive symptoms and treatment-related anxiety explained an additional 37% (final model: 52% of variance explained). For global QOL, sociodemographic and clinical factors explained 13% of the variance in scores, while depressive symptoms explained a further 25% (final model: 38% of variance explained). Parental factors were not associated with child QOL outcomes. CONCLUSIONS Children and adolescents with Fontan physiology experience lower HRQOL than community-based norms, despite reporting fair overall QOL. Psychological factors predominantly influenced QOL outcomes, indicating strategies to bolster psychological health could improve QOL in this population.

Abstract
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a highly prevalent psychiatric disorder and a leading cause of disability worldwide. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a signaling protein responsible for promoting neuroplasticity, is highly expressed in the central nervous system but can also be found in the blood. Since impaired brain plasticity is considered a cornerstone in the pathophysiology of MDD, measurement of BDNF in blood has been proposed as a potential biomarker in MDD. The aim of our study is to systematically review the literature for the effects of antidepressant treatments on blood BDNF levels in MDD and the suitability of blood BDNF as a biomarker for depression severity and antidepressant response. We searched Pubmed® and Cochrane library up to March 2024 in a systematic manner using Medical Subject Headings (MeSH). The search resulted in a total of 42 papers, of which 30 were included in this systematic review. Generally, we found that patients with untreated MDD have a lower blood BDNF level than healthy controls. Antidepressant treatments increase blood BDNF levels, and more evidently after pharmacological than non-pharmacological treatment. Neither baseline nor change in the blood BDNF level correlates with depression severity or treatment outcome, which undermines its use as a biomarker in MDD. Our review also highlights the importance of considering factors influencing the accuracy and reproducibility of BDNF measurements. We summarize considerations to help obtain more robust blood BDNF values and compile a list of recommendations to help streamline assessment of blood BDNF levels in future studies.

Abstract
There is growing enthusiasm towards the role of smartphone app-based interventions in the management of insomnia and related sleep problems. A considerable number of apps designed to address insomnia have been developed in recent years, and randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have begun to explore their efficacy. We conducted a meta-analysis investigating the effectiveness of apps for insomnia and sleep disturbances. From 19 RCTs, we identified significant pooled effect sizes for the primary outcomes of self-reported insomnia (g = 0.60; 05 % CI = 0.44, 0.76; NNT = 4.8) and sleep disturbances (g = 0.70; 95 % CI = 0.58, 0.83; NNT = 4.1) in favour of apps over control conditions. These effects remained robust when restricting the analyses to trials that delivered a placebo control, received a lower risk of bias rating, and had a larger sample size. Significant pooled effects in favour of apps were also observed for secondary outcomes of night time awakenings (g = 0.56), total sleep time (g = 0.33), and sleep onset latency (g = 0.32), but non-significant effects emerged for daytime sleepiness, dysfunctional beliefs about sleep, sleep efficiency, sleep hygiene, and wake after sleep onset. The pooled dropout rate from app conditions was 13.1 % (95 % CI = 8.3, 20.0), which was significantly higher than control conditions (OR = 1.78, 95 % CI = 1.39, 2.28). Findings suggest that stand-alone app-based interventions can effectively address insomnia and sleep disturbances, and may play an important role in the management of these symptoms.

Abstract
The role of gut microbiota in health and disease is being thoroughly examined in various contexts, with a specific focus on the bacterial fraction due to its significant abundance. However, despite their lower abundance, viruses within the gut microbiota are gaining recognition for their crucial role in shaping the structure and function of the intestinal microbiota, with significant effects on the host as a whole, particularly the immune system. Similarly, environmental factors such as stress are key in modulating the host immune system, which in turn influences the composition of the gut virome and neurological functions through the bidirectional communication of the gut-brain axis. In this context, alterations in the host immune system due to stress and/or dysbiosis of the gut virome are critical factors in the development of both infectious and noninfectious diseases. The molecular mechanisms and correlation patterns between microbial species are not yet fully understood. This literature review seeks to explore the interconnected relationship between stress and the gut virome, with a focus on how this interaction is influenced by the host's immune system. We also discuss how disturbances in this finely balanced system can lead to the onset and/or progression of diseases.

Abstract
Habituation refers to the physiological adaptation to recurrent stressors, which can be measured by cortisol levels, and is considered a central mechanism in reducing allostatic load. Resilience, a potential factor influencing stress reduction, is the focus of this study. Specifically, the study aims to investigate the impact of resilience, as assessed by the Brief Resilience Scale (BRS), on habituation. The Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) was used as the recurrent stressor, and it was administered to each of the 56 subjects at 4 consecutive measurements. To assess habituation, various physiological parameters including the area under the curve with respect to the ground (AUCg) and with respect to the increase (AUCi), cortisol peak, slope from baseline to peak, and recovery were calculated. Mixed linear models were employed to examine the differences in the influence of resilience on habituation across the different time points. The findings indicate that the influence of resilience significantly varies from the first to the fourth measurement time point for AUCg (p = .048), while no significant differences were observed for the other cortisol parameters. The effects plot suggests that individuals with higher levels of resilience exhibit lower AUCg values throughout the measurements. These findings provide initial evidence supporting resilience as a predictor of cortisol habituation. However, future studies should also consider dynamic resilience models, utilizing longitudinally assessed resilience as a predictor for habituation, to explore whether resilience acts as a determinant of habituation or if habituation itself constitutes a resilience mechanism.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prior studies have established an association between a history of abuse and more severe migraine presentation. OBJECTIVES This cross-sectional, observational study of a clinic-based migraine population used validated measures to elucidate migraine-specific and migraine-related burdens among patients with a history of abuse. METHODS Patients with migraine (n = 866) from the American Registry for Migraine Research self-reported if they had a history of emotional, physical, and/or sexual abuse and completed questionnaires assessing migraine-related burden: Migraine Disability Assessment, Subjective Cognitive Impairment Scale for Migraine Attacks, Work Productivity and Activity Impairment, Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System Pain Interference, Patient Health Questionnaire-2, and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7. Migraine-related burden in patients with versus without a history of abuse was compared. Subsequently, a mediation analysis evaluated the impact of depression and anxiety symptoms in the relationship between abuse history and migraine burden. RESULTS A history of abuse was reported by 36.5% (n = 316/866) of participants. After controlling for patient age, sex, years lived with headache, and headache frequency, a history of abuse was significantly associated with more severe migraine-related disability. The combined burden of depression and anxiety symptoms mediated the relationship. CONCLUSION A history of abuse is associated with greater migraine-related disability. Future studies should determine if identification and management of the psychological and physical sequelae of abuse reduce migraine burden.

Abstract
Depression commonly co-occurs with chronic pain and can worsen pain outcomes. Recent theoretical work has hypothesized that pain localized to the left hemibody is a risk factor for worse depression due to overlap in underlying neural substrates. This hypothesis has not been tested a priori. Using a large sample of treatment-seeking adults with mixed-etiology chronic pain (N = 1,185), our cross-sectional study tested whether patients with left-sided pain endorse worse depressive symptoms. We also examined differences in other pain-related functioning measures. We tested 4 comparisons based on painful body areas using the CHOIR body map: 1) only left-sided (OL) versus any right-sided pain; 2) only right-sided (OR) versus any left-sided pain; 3) OL versus OR versus bilateral pain; and 4) more left-sided versus more right-sided versus equal-sided pain. Analysis of variance models showed OL pain was not associated with worse depression (F = 5.50, P = .019). Any left-sided pain was associated with worse depression, though the effect was small (F = 8.58, P = .003, Cohens d = .29). Bilateral pain was associated with worse depression (F = 8.05, P < .001, Cohens d = .24-.33). Regardless of pain location, more body areas endorsed was associated with greater depression. Although a more rigorous assessment of pain laterality is needed, our findings do not support the hypothesis that left-lateralized pain is associated with worse depression. PERSPECTIVE: Pain lateralized to the left side of the body has been hypothesized as a risk factor for worse depression in chronic pain, despite never being tested in a large, real-world sample of patients with chronic pain. Findings showed that more widespread pain, not pain laterality, was associated with worse depression.

Abstract
Anorexia nervosa (AN) and obesity (OB) lie on the two ends of the broad spectrum of extreme weight conditions (EWC). Both disorders entail the constant risk to one's body integrity. Importantly, risk-taking is supported by internal signals, the perception of which is typically distorted in EWC. In this study, we sought to characterize in EWC: (i) risky decision-making by contrasting situations in which people process bodies or neutral objects and (ii) the relationship between interoceptive ability and risky decision-making. In a between-subject design, participants with AN restricting type, participants with class 2 OB, and two groups of matched healthy controls (HC) (total N = 160) were administered either the Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART) or a modified version of it by using a body-related stimulus as a cue in the place of the balloon. Moreover, we collected a measure of interoceptive sensibility and a measure of interoceptive accuracy. Results showed that, when analysing the global population as a continuum based on the BMI, the risk propensity decreased as a function of increased BMI, only for the task involving a body-related stimulus. Moreover, while HC risk propensity toward a body-related stimulus correlated with interoceptive sensibility, such correlation was absent in participants with AN. Individuals with OB, on the opposite pole, showed mixed interaction between interoception and risky decision-making in both tasks. These findings add one more tile to understanding these complex pathologies in the EWC spectrum, opening up future differential rehabilitation scenarios.

Abstract
Interventions that target mental health symptoms and stress among those with established cardiac disease have included predominately male samples despite female patients reporting greater severity of these symptoms. The aim of this scoping review was to synthesize the published literature on psychological interventions for females with cardiac disease. We conducted a systematic search of peer-reviewed randomized clinical trials (RCTs) published in the English language from 2003 to 2023, in three databases: Medline (Ovid), PsycInfo (Ovid), and CINAHL (EBSCO). Articles that included female samples, a control or comparison group, implemented psychological interventions, and measured depression, anxiety, or stress as an outcome were included in the review. Nine articles describing eight RCTs of psychological interventions, with a total of 1587 female patients with cardiac disease, were included. Interventions were most successful at reducing stress (75% of studies measuring stress reported efficacy), while symptoms of depression and anxiety were less responsive to intervention (∼30% of studies targeting these symptoms reported improvements) in comparison to a control condition. This scoping review highlights that further advancement in knowledge is required to better address the needs of females with cardiac disease and distress, particularly depression and anxiety.

Abstract
Importance Supporting healthy aging is a US public health priority, and gratitude is a potentially modifiable psychological factor that may enhance health and well-being in older adults. However, the association between gratitude and mortality has not been studied. Objective To examine the association of gratitude with all-cause and cause-specific mortality in later life. Design, Setting, and Participants This population-based prospective cohort study used data from self-reported questionnaires and medical records of 49 275 US older female registered nurses who participated in the Nurses' Health Study (2016 questionnaire wave to December 2019). Cox proportional hazards regression models estimated the hazard ratio (HR) of deaths by self-reported levels of gratitude at baseline. These models adjusted for baseline sociodemographic characteristics, social participation, physical health, lifestyle factors, cognitive function, and mental health. Data analysis was conducted from December 2022 to April 2024. Exposure Gratitude was assessed with the 6-item Gratitude Questionnaire, a validated and widely used measure of one's tendency to experience grateful affect. Main Outcomes and Measures Deaths were identified from the National Death Index, state statistics records, reports by next of kin, and the postal system. Causes of death were ascertained by physicians through reviewing death certificates and medical records. Results Among the 49 275 participants (all female; mean [SD] age at baseline, 79 [6.16] years), 4608 incident deaths were identified over 151 496 person-years of follow-up. Greater gratitude at baseline was associated with a lower hazard of mortality in a monotonic fashion. For instance, the highest tertile of gratitude, compared with the lowest tertile, was associated with a lower hazard of all-cause deaths (HR, 0.91; 95% CI, 0.84-0.99) after adjusting for baseline sociodemographic characteristics, social participation, religious involvement, physical health, lifestyle factors, cognitive function, and mental health. When considering cause-specific deaths, death from cardiovascular disease was inversely associated with gratitude (HR, 0.85; 95% CI, 0.73-0.995). Conclusions and Relevance This study provides the first empirical evidence suggesting that experiencing grateful affect is associated with increased longevity among older adults. The findings will need to be replicated in future studies with more representative samples.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cognitive impairments are a hallmark symptom of schizophrenia (SCZ). Phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) is the second most abundant phospholipid in mammalian cells, yet its role in cognitive deficits remains unexplored. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between plasma LysoPE and cognitive improvements following olanzapine monotherapy in drug-naïve first-episode (DNFE) SCZ patients. METHODS Twenty-five female DNFE SCZ patients were treated with olanzapine for four weeks, and cognitive function was assessed using the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS) at baseline and after the 4-week follow-up. Utilizing an untargeted ultra-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS)-based metabolomics approach, we measured LysoPE concentrations. RESULTS Significant improvements in immediate and delayed memory domains were observed post-treatment. We identified nine differential LysoPE species after olanzapine monotherapy, with increased concentrations for all LysoPE except LysoPE (22:6). Elevated LysoPE (22:1) concentration positively correlated with cognitive improvement in patients. Baseline LysoPE (16:1) emerged as a predictive factor for cognitive improvement following olanzapine monotherapy. CONCLUSIONS This study offers preliminary evidence for the involvement of LysoPE in cognitive improvements observed in drug-naïve first-episode SCZ patients after olanzapine treatment.

Abstract
AIM Chemosensory anhedonia refers to the lack of hedonic ability to experience pleasure through the senses of smell and taste, which reduces the pleasure and comfort of food, and increases the risk of nutritional and immune deficiencies. However, there is no direct scientific evidence regarding chemosensory anhedonia in patients with late-life depression (LLD). The aim of this study was to investigate chemosensory anhedonia in patients with LLD, and its potential association with depressive symptoms and cognitive function. METHODS A total of 114 patients with LLD and 92 normal controls were included in this study. They experienced clinical assessment, Chemosensory Pleasure Scale assessment, 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale assessment and cognitive assessments, which contain the Verbal Fluency Test. The associations between chemosensory pleasure and depressive symptoms or cognitive function in patients with LLD were explored using partial correlation analysis and mediation analysis. RESULTS The Chemosensory Pleasure Scale scores were lower in the LLD group than in the normal control group, and were negatively correlated with the total scores and factors' scores (retardation, cognitive bias and anxiety/somatization) of the 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, and positively correlated with the Verbal Fluency Test scores. The scores for the Food and Imagination dimensions of the Chemosensory Pleasure Scale showed partial mediating effects on the differences in Cognitive bias (a factor of the 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale) between patients with LLD and normal controls. CONCLUSIONS Patients with LLD showed significant chemosensory anhedonia, and both depressive symptoms and cognitive impairment were associated with the severity of chemosensory anhedonia. Enhancing chemosensory pleasure in patients with LLD could potentially ameliorate their depressive symptoms. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2024; 24: 1022-1029.

Background The perseverative cognition hypothesis stipulates that rumination (repetitive, passive, uncontrollable negative thinking) prolongs the experience of a stressor which impacts stress physiology. In line with this hypothesis, we proposed that in response to real-life experiences of social rejection, adolescent girls who ruminate would show a blunted diurnal cortisol slope the next day relative to girls who do not ruminate. We also examined the effects of social rejection and rumination on waking cortisol levels and the cortisol awakening response. Method Participants were (n = 50) adolescent girls (mean age = 13.30, SD = 2.34) who varied on psychiatric risk and provided saliva samples 4 times a day for 3 days, as well as, daily diary reports of social rejection and rumination. A lagged multilevel model was utilized to examine the interactive effects of rejection and rumination on diurnal cortisol. Results There was a significant interaction between social rejection and rumination. Specifically, rumination following social rejection was associated with a flatter diurnal cortisol slope. In the absence of rumination, social rejection was marginally associated with a steeper diurnal cortisol slope. The effects for waking cortisol levels and the cortisol awakening response were null. Conclusion Findings support the perseverative cognition hypothesis and suggest that cognitive mechanisms such as rumination can impact stress physiology.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Late adolescence (15-19 years) is a period of heightened susceptibility to stress, but regular physical activity may attenuate reactivity to stressors. We aimed to explore the effects of physical activity intensity on older adolescents' stress-reactivity and self-reported mental health. DESIGN and methods. Three-arm randomised controlled trial in New South Wales, Australia (April-June, 2021). Thirty-seven older adolescents (16.1±0.2 years, 59.5% female) were randomised to: i) non active control (CON), ii) light-intensity physical activity (LPA), or iii) moderate-to-vigorous-intensity physical activity (MVPA). Physical activity groups participated in 2 x 20-min sessions/week for 6 weeks. Salivary cortisol (sCort) reactivity to induced stress was assessed using the Trier Social Stress Test for Groups and quantified as area under the curve (sCortAUC; Primary outcome). Secondary outcomes included peak cortisol (sCortPeak), subjective-reactivity, perceived stress, and non-specific psychological distress. Group differences were assessed using multiple linear regression and quantified using Cohen's d. RESULTS No effects were observed for sCortAUC or sCortPeak and the pattern of effects for subjective-reactivity was inconsistent. Effects for self-reported mental health were also non-significant (p > .05 for all) but of meaningful magnitude, favouring LPA and MVPA over CON (d's = -0.38 to -0.54). Delivery fidelity was high, satisfaction was moderate-to-high, and there was no evidence of harm. However, recruitment, retention for sCort measures, and adherence were lower than expected. CONCLUSION Suboptimal recruitment, retention, and adherence limited our ability to conclude on the effect of physical activity intensity on older adolescents' sCort-reactivity to induced stress. We observed potentially meaningful effects on self-reported mental health irrespective of intensity, which could be confirmed in a future powered trial.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study analyzed qualitative research to explore cancer patients' perspectives on MBIs, including benefits, challenges, and recommendations. METHODS This systematic review focused on synthesizing qualitative data and was registered with PROSPERO under the protocol registration number xxx. Searched 7 databases for qualitative studies on MBIs & cancer patients (17 studies, 365 patients). Analyzed data using themes & assessed confidence in findings. RESULTS Thematic analysis using NVivo software revealed four significant themes: (1) benefits and positive outcomes (e.g., symptom improvement, team support, positive experiences), (2) challenges and difficulties (e.g., practice challenges, negative experiences), (3) the journey of change and acceptance (e.g., shifts in perception, personal growth, and acceptance), and (4) adaptations and recommendations (e.g., program modification and flexibility). CONCLUSION Mindfulness-based interventions have the potential to offer cancer patients positive emotional experiences, increased team support, and opportunities for personal growth, self-discovery, and acceptance. This, in turn, can help them manage the psychological distress associated with cancer. Customizing programs to align with individual patients' needs and preferences can enhance engagement and effectiveness. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Integrating MBIs into Patient Education and Counseling, tailored to individual needs and with ongoing support, can enhance cancer care. Group interventions foster peer support and effectiveness. Training providers and ensuring accessibility are crucial. Research and customization to patients' journeys optimize outcomes and satisfaction. A patient-centered approach is essential for positive experiences and improved clinical outcomes.

Abstract
In recent years, a burgeoning field of research has focused on women's mental health and psychiatric conditions associated with perinatal and postpartum periods. An emerging trend points to the link between hormone fluctuations during pregnancy and postpartum that have immunologic consequences in cases of perinatal depression and postpartum psychosis. The transition to menopause (or "perimenopause") has garnered comparatively less attention, but existing studies point to the influential interaction of hormonal and immune pathways. Moreover, the role of this cross talk in perturbing neural networks has been implicated in risk for cognitive decline, but relatively less work has focused on the depressed brain during perimenopause. This brief review brings a psychoneuroimmunology lens to depression during the perimenopausal period by providing an overview of existing knowledge and suggestions for future research to intertwine these bodies of work.

Abstract
Sleep problems are common in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). How sleep problems reflect specific ASD phenotypes is unclear. We studied whether sleep problems indexed functional impairment in a heterogeneous community sample of individuals with ASD. We analyzed 977 probands (233 females; age = 11.27 ± 4.13 years) from the Rhode Island Consortium for Autism Research and Treatment dataset, a unique public-private-academic collaboration involving all major points of service for families in Rhode Island. We found that individuals with a confirmed diagnosis of ASD were more likely to have sleep problems. However, across the whole sample and above and beyond a formal diagnosis, sleep problems were dimensionally associated with worse social impairment and poorer adaptive functioning. By using a large dataset reflective of the diversity of presentations in the community, this study underscores the importance of considering sleep problems in clinical practice to improve adaptive functioning in individuals with ASD.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Childhood maltreatment, particularly emotional abuse (EA), has been identified as a significant risk factor for the development of eating disorders (EDs). This study investigated the association between EA and ED symptoms while considering multiple potential mediators. METHODS Participants included 151 individuals with Anorexia Nervosa (AN), 115 with Bulimia Nervosa (BN), and 108 healthy controls. The Childhood trauma questionnaire, the Toronto Alexithymia scale, the Behavioral inhibition System, and the Eating Disorder Inventory 2 scale were completed before treatment. A mediator path model was conducted in each group: EA was set as independent variable, eating symptoms as dependent variables and ineffectiveness, sensitivity to punishment, alexithymia, and impulsivity as mediators. RESULTS In individuals with AN, impulsivity emerged as a significant mediator between EA and desire for thinness and bulimic behaviors. Conversely, in individuals with BN, sensitivity to punishment was found to mediate the association between EA and dissatisfaction with one's body. Ineffectiveness and difficulty identifying emotions were identified as transdiagnostic mediators in both clinical groups. No mediation effect was found in healthy individuals. DISCUSSION The simultaneous assessment of multiple mediators in a unique model outlines the complex interplay between childhood EA and ED psychopathology. Improving ineffectiveness, emotion identification, sensitivity to punishment and impulsivity and exploring their relations with early emotional abuse may represent treatment targets in individuals with EDs and childhood trauma.

Abstract
This study investigated posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) prevalence among a sample of intimate partner violence (IPV) survivors (n = 77) who filed for restraining orders in rural Louisiana during the COVID-19 pandemic. IPV survivors were individually interviewed to assess their self-reported levels of perceived stress, resilience, potential PTSD, COVID-19-related experiences, and sociodemographic characteristics. Data were analyzed to differentiate group membership between two groups; non-PTSD and probable PTSD. Results suggest the probable PTSD group had lower levels of resilience and higher levels of perceived stress compared to the non-PTSD group. Findings suggest the importance of providing services during disaster to reduce PTSD for IPV survivors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The present study aims to evaluate the feasibility of utilizing a digital procedure to screen for anxiety and depression as well as impairments in psychosocial aspects, such as social support, social activity and quality of life (QoL) in women with epilepsy (WWE) after childbirth. Furthermore, the study intends to digitally screen for burden of the respective caregivers in WWE compared to a healthy control group. MATERIALS AND METHODS This comparative cross-sectional study was conducted in the post-partum period on 30 WWE and 33 healthy controls who gave birth between 01/2018 and 05/2021. Additionally, 24 caregivers of WWE and 26 caregivers of healthy mothers took part in this study. Information on psychosocial health and psychosocial burden was collected digitally using the short version of the Social Support Questionnaire, the Social Activity Self-Report Scale and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. The caregiver burden was digitally assessed with the Zarit Burden Scale in its German adaptation (i.e., Zarit Burden Interview and the Family Burden Questionnaire). Furthermore, QoL was assessed with the QOLIE-31 (Quality of Life in Epilepsy Inventory) in WWE and with the Life Satisfaction Questionnaire in healthy controls. RESULTS When comparing WWE and healthy controls, the groups were comparable on psychosocial aspects, such as self-reported social support, anxiety, depression and social activity, when assessed with self-report measures in a digital screening procedure. Although not significantly different between groups, anxiety, depression, self-reported social support and social activity were correlated with overall QoL in both, WWE and healthy controls. Caregivers of WWE and healthy controls were neither significantly different in their objective burden nor in their subjective burden as reported in digitally applied self-report measures. CONCLUSION Although not significantly different between groups, given the correlation between psychosocial aspects and QoL, it is worthwhile to include these aspects in standard clinical screening extending beyond the screening of anxiety and depression in WWE. Overall, the preliminary psychosocial data presented in this study suggest that a digital assessment of psychosocial burden seems reasonable in WWE and warrants integration into further research and clinical practice. Nevertheless, since no significant differences concerning psychosocial aspects were found in the present study, one may argue that highly specialized clinical care, as provided in the present study, may counteract potential psychosocial impairment experienced by WWE who do not receive such specialized care. Hence, further investigations outside of specialized outpatient clinics as well as prospective investigations of subjective factors that may dynamically change during pregnancy ought to be addressed in clinical practice and research for improving care during and after pregnancy in WWE.

Abstract
Systematic reviews suggest that stand-alone hypnotic suggestions may improve pain outcomes compared with no treatment, waitlist, or usual care. However, in clinical practice, hypnosis is often provided adjunctively with other interventions, which might have different effects than those reported in previous reviews. This systematic review aimed to summarize the analgesic effects of adjunctive hypnosis in adults with clinical pain. Seven databases (MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, Emcare, SCOPUS, CENTRAL, Cochrane) were searched up to January 2024. Randomised controlled trials comparing the analgesic effects of adjunctive hypnosis (hypnosis + primary intervention) with those of the primary intervention alone were included. Meta-analyses (random-effects model) calculated mean differences (MD, [95% confidence intervals]) for pain intensity (0-100). Seventy studies were pooled in meta-analyses (n = 6078). Hypnosis adjunctive to usual care had a small additional analgesic effect (chronic pain: -8.2 [-11.8, -1.9]; medical procedures/surgical pain: -6.9 [-10.4, -3.3]; burn wound care: -8.8 [-13.8, -3.9]). Hypnosis adjunctive to education had a medium additional analgesic effect for chronic pain (-11.5 [-19.7, 3.3]) but not postsurgery pain (-2.0 [-7.8, 3.7]). When paired with psychological interventions, hypnosis slightly increased analgesia in chronic pain only at the three-month follow-up (-2 [-3.7, -0.3]). Hypnosis adjunctive to medicines had a medium additional analgesic effect for chronic pain (-13.2, [-22.5, -3.8]). The overall evidence certainty is very low; therefore, there is still uncertainty about the analgesic effects of adjunctive hypnosis. However, hypnosis adjunct to education may reduce pain intensity for chronic pain. Clarification of proposed therapeutic targets of adjunctive hypnosis to evaluate underlying mechanisms is warranted.

Abstract
The "International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation Guidelines for the Evaluation and Care of Cardiac Transplant Candidates-2024" updates and replaces the "Listing Criteria for Heart Transplantation: International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation Guidelines for the Care of Cardiac Transplant Candidates-2006" and the "2016 International Society for Heart Lung Transplantation Listing Criteria for Heart Transplantation: A 10-year Update." The document aims to provide tools to help integrate the numerous variables involved in evaluating patients for transplantation, emphasizing updating the collaborative treatment while waiting for a transplant. There have been significant practice-changing developments in the care of heart transplant recipients since the publication of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT) guidelines in 2006 and the 10-year update in 2016. The changes pertain to 3 aspects of heart transplantation: (1) patient selection criteria, (2) care of selected patient populations, and (3) durable mechanical support. To address these issues, 3 task forces were assembled. Each task force was cochaired by a pediatric heart transplant physician with the specific mandate to highlight issues unique to the pediatric heart transplant population and ensure their adequate representation. This guideline was harmonized with other ISHLT guidelines published through November 2023. The 2024 ISHLT guidelines for the evaluation and care of cardiac transplant candidates provide recommendations based on contemporary scientific evidence and patient management flow diagrams. The American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association modular knowledge chunk format has been implemented, allowing guideline information to be grouped into discrete packages (or modules) of information on a disease-specific topic or management issue. Aiming to improve the quality of care for heart transplant candidates, the recommendations present an evidence-based approach.

Abstract
When presented with visual stimuli of face images, the ventral stream visual cortex of the human brain exhibits face-specific activity that is modulated by the physical properties of the input images. However, it is still unclear whether this activity relates to conscious face perception. We explored this issue by using the human intracranial electroencephalography technique. Our results showed that face-specific activity in the ventral stream visual cortex was significantly higher when the subjects subjectively saw faces than when they did not, even when face stimuli were presented in both conditions. In addition, the face-specific neural activity exhibited a more reliable neural response and increased posterior-anterior direction information transfer in the "seen" condition than the "unseen" condition. Furthermore, the face-specific neural activity was significantly correlated with performance. These findings support the view that face-specific activity in the ventral stream visual cortex is linked to conscious face perception.

Abstract
Objective: Sickle cell disease (SCD), the most common inherited blood disorder in the United States, is associated with severe psychoneurological symptoms. While epigenetic age acceleration has been linked to psychoneurological symptom burden in other diseases, this connection is unexplored in SCD. This study aimed to assess the association between epigenetic age acceleration and psychoneurological symptom burden in SCD. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, emotional impact, pain impact, sleep impact, social functioning, and cognitive function were assessed in 87 adults living with SCD. DNA methylation data were generated from blood specimens and used to calculate epigenetic age using five clocks (Horvath, Hannum, PhenoAge, GrimAge, & DunedinPACE). Associations between epigenetic age acceleration and symptoms were assessed. Results: The sample (N = 87) had a mean (SD) chronologic age was 30.6 (8.1) years. Epigenetic age acceleration was associated with several symptom outcomes. GrimAge age acceleration (β = -0.49, p = .03) and increased DunedinPACE (β = -2.23, p = .004) were associated with worse emotional impact scores. PhenoAge (β = -0.32, p = .04) and the GrimAge (β = -0.48, p = .05) age acceleration were associated with worse pain impact scores. Increased DunedinPACE (β = -2.07 p = .04) were associated with worse sleep impact scores. Increased DunedinPACE (β = -2.87, p = .005) was associated with worse social functioning scores. We did not find associations between epigenetic age acceleration and cognitive function in this sample. Conclusion: Epigenetic age acceleration was associated with worse symptom experiences, suggesting the potential for epigenetic age acceleration as a biomarker to aid in risk stratification or targets for intervention to mitigate symptom burden in SCD.

Abstract
Chronic stress is a major precursor to various neuropsychiatric disorders and is linked with increased inflammation in the brain. However, the bidirectional association between inflammation and chronic stress has yet to be fully understood. Astrocytes are one of the key inflammatory regulators in the brain, and the morphological change in reactive astrocytes serves as an important indicator of inflammation. In this study, we evaluated the sex-specific astrocyte response to chronic stress or systemic inflammation in key brain regions associated with mood disorders. We conducted the unpredictable chronic mild stress (UCMS) paradigm to model chronic stress, or lipopolysaccharide (LPS) injection to model systemic inflammation. To evaluate stress-induced morphological changes in astrocyte complexity, we measured GFAP fluorescent intensity for astrocyte expression, branch bifurcation by quantifying branch points and terminal points, branch arborization by conducting Sholl analysis, and calculated the ramification index. Our analysis indicated that chronic stress-induced morphological changes in astrocytes in all brain regions investigated. The effects of chronic stress were region and sex specific. Notably, females had greater stress or inflammation-induced astrocyte activation in the hypothalamus (HYPO), CA1, CA3, and amygdala (AMY) than males. These findings indicate that chronic stress induces astrocyte activation that may drive sex and region-specific effects in females, potentially contributing to sex-dependent mechanisms of disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with severe asthma often have uncontrolled disease and experience mood disorders, particularly anxiety and depression. The autonomic nervous system (ANS) plays an important role in asthma, mainly through the parasympathetic ANS system (PANS), which favors bronchoconstriction and mental health status. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the role of the activation of the PANS in uncontrolled asthma and related mood disorders. METHODS This was a proof-of-concept cross-sectional study that analyzed demographic and clinical variables reflecting asthma severity and control, lung function, inflammation (from induced sputum), evaluation of quality of life, and the risk for anxiety and depression according to validated questionnaires. The PANS analysis was conducted based on heart rate variability: SD of the difference between consecutive normal-to-normal (NN) intervals (SDNN), root mean square of the successive differences (RMSSD), percentage of consecutive NN intervals (pNN50), total power (TP), and respiratory-related power (Pr). RESULTS A total of 30 patients with asthma were grouped according to asthma control and the risk for anxiety and depression; 10 patients with uncontrolled asthma compared with the patients with controlled asthma showed significant differences (P < .05) in SDNN (26.5 [8.2] vs 42.7 [29.7]), RMSSD (14.1 [6.5] vs 24 [20]), pNN50 (0.6 [1.5] vs 6.2 [11.8]), TP (0.0005 [0.00046] vs 0.0014 [0.00085]), and Pr (0.0003 [0.00025] vs 0.0007 [0.00060]) respectively. A total of 13 patients at risk for anxiety and depression compared with the patients without showed reduced values (P < .05) for SDNN (26.5 [7.9] vs 45.6 [31.3]), pNN50 (0.75 [1.4] to 7.12 [12.6]), TP (0.0005 [0.00048] to 0.0012 [0.0008]), and Pr (0.0003 [0.00027] to 0.0008 [0.00062]). CONCLUSION Our results suggest that PANS activity is depressed in patients with uncontrolled asthma and common mood disorders such as depression and anxiety, and the evaluation of heart rate variability may be a useful means for follow-up of asthma control and related mood disorders.

Abstract
PURPOSE The shifts in the opposite directions, toward later and earlier sleep timing, occur during the transition through adolescence and adulthood, respectively. Such a n-shape of age-associated change in sleep timing does not resemble the inverse relationship of sleep duration with ages. Age-associated variation in the parameters of the mechanisms of circadian and homeostatic regulation of sleep would underlie these different shapes of relationship of sleep times with ages. Here, we searched for a parsimonious explanation of these different shapes by simulating sleep times on weekdays and weekends with one of the variants of the two-process model of sleep regulation. METHODS Using mean age of a sample with reported sleep times on weekdays and weekends, the whole set of 1404 such samples was subdivided into 15 age subsets. Simulations of sleep times in these subsets were performed with and without the suggestion of age-associated variation in the circadian phase. RESULTS Simulations showed that the age-associated decay of slow-wave activity can parsimoniously explain not only the parallel decreases in weekend sleep duration and rate of the buildup of sleep pressure during the wake phase of the sleep-wake cycle, but also both the delay and advance of sleep timing during the transition through adolescence and adulthood, respectively. CONCLUSION The almost functional relationships were revealed between the age-related changes in sleep duration, rate of the buildup of sleep pressure, and slow-wave activity that is a good electrophysiological marker of cortical metabolic rate and synaptic density, strength and efficacy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Headache disorders are among the most prevalent neurological disorders worldwide. However, whether groups differing in socioeconomic position (SEP) are disproportionately affected by headache disorders has not yet been adequately clarified. Our aim was to analyse (1) the headache prevalence by socioeconomic position (SEP) and (2) the attack frequency by SEP in a German population-based adult sample. METHODS Cross-sectional data from a random general population were used. The sample included N = 2,189 participants aged ≥ 18 years. SEP was measured using net equivalised income (NEI) and education. A binary logistic regression model tested the effect of SEP in predicting the prevalence of headache in general. Ordinal logistic regressions were modeled to predict the effect of SEP on the likelihood of attack frequency. Attack frequency was categorized in low frequency episodic headache (LFEH: 0-3 days per month), moderate frequency episodic headache (MFEH: 4-14 days per month) and chronic headache (CH: ≥ 15 days per month). RESULTS Of the 2,189 participants, 891 reported headache in the last six months. Neither income nor education was associated with headache prevalence. However, significant differences between income groups were found for attack frequency. Compared to participants with NEI > 150%, those with NEI < 60% were 5.21 times more likely (95%CI 2.03, 13.36) to experience higher headache frequency, and those with NEI between 60 and 150% were 2.29 times more likely (95%CI 1.02, 5.11), with adjustments made for a set of potential confounders, including depressive symptoms. CONCLUSIONS To reduce headache attacks, it is essential to address both low- and middle-income groups affected by headaches. Universal public health prevention campaigns are particularly appropriate.

Abstract
Alexithymia is a multi-faceted personality trait, which is the inability to recognize and describe emotions. It is associated with a multitude of mental health problems, and its implication for the diagnosis and treatment of depression remains unclear. The current study explored the nuances of the relationship between alexithymia and depression in a sample of 210 patients with depression. We assessed alexithymia with the 20-Item Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) and depression with the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-I). The mean TAS-20 score was 57.47 ± 10.63, and the mean BDI-I score was 49.33±9.24. We explored the network structure of alexithymia and depression. Items related to difficulties in identifying, describing, and expressing feelings were prominent in the alexithymia network. Joy, guilt, and self-dislike stand out in the depression network. In our analysis, we were able to show the crescent relationship between depression and alexithymia, with an inflection point at a TAS-20 score of 53. Although the correlation-concordance index was moderate (0.41; 95 %CI: 0.29-0.51), both scales greatly overlap. In the joint network of alexithymia and depression, we could identify bridge (i.e., connecting) items between alexithymia and depression. These were difficulties understanding and relating feelings to physical and body sensations on the alexithymia side, and self-dislike, crying, and somatic concern on the depression side. Taken together, they point to the pivotal role of alexithymia in the somatization/embodiment of emotions and feelings in depression.

Abstract
Individuals with somatic symptom disorder (SSD) often have comorbid depression or anxiety, but whether SSD is associated with specific neuropsychological functions has yet to be fully examined. We analyzed which neuropsychological features are more closely associated with SSD, anxiety, and depression. In this case-control study, we recruited 140 individuals with SSD, 104 individuals with affective disorders without SSD, and 159 healthy controls in Taiwan. We collected DSM-5 diagnoses, questionnaire scores, and performance on eight tasks from the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB) for each participant. Several CANTAB tasks involving attention, executive function, and social cognition showed significant group differences. In the adjusted analysis, the tasks significantly associated with SSD were the Match to Sample Visual Search (MTS) and the Emotion Recognition Task (ERT). Among the questionnaires, the Cognitions about Body and Health Questionnaire showed the most significant associations with the tasks, specifically with Rapid Visual Information Processing, MTS, Paired Associates Learning, Spatial Working Memory, Intra-Extra Dimensional Set Shift, and ERT. We conclude that the MTS and ERT tasks show significant relationships with both SSD diagnosis and related questionnaires. These tasks primarily involve selective attention and negative emotion regulation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Childhood trauma is a risk factor for self-harm/suicidal behavior, but research on the potential association linking sleep quality and anxiety symptoms to childhood trauma and self-harm attempt is limited. The aim of this study was to describe the mediating role of sleep quality and anxiety symptoms between childhood trauma and self-harm attempt, and to provide a scientific basis for the prevention of self-harm behaviors. METHODS This study ultimately included 11,063 study participants who participated in the baseline survey of this large prospective cohort study of the UK Biobank. We used structural equation modeling (SEM) to analyze the chain mediating role of sleep quality and anxiety symptoms in childhood trauma and self-harm attempt while controlling for covariates. RESULTS A total of 19.58 % of study participants self-reported self-harm attempt. Sleep quality was negatively correlated with childhood trauma, anxiety symptoms, and self-harm attempt (p < 0.01). Childhood trauma, anxiety symptoms, and self-harm attempt were positively correlated (p < 0.01). In addition, after adjusting for confounders, anxiety symptoms were able to partially mediate the association between childhood trauma and self-harm attempt (effect value: 0.042, p < 0.01), and sleep quality and anxiety symptoms can chain mediate the association between childhood trauma and self-harm attempt (effect value:0.002, p < 0.01), with a total mediating effect of 65.67 % of the total effect. Subgroup analyses further showed that the mediating effects of sleep quality and anxiety symptoms on childhood trauma and self-harm attempt differed across age, gender, ethnicity, and smoking and drinking subgroups. CONCLUSIONS This study found a complex relationship between childhood trauma, sleep quality, anxiety symptoms, and self-harm attempt, with sleep quality and anxiety symptoms mediating the relationship between childhood trauma and self-harm attempt. Multiple avenues of intervention, such as the provision of professional psychological interventions and timely monitoring, should be used to improve the sleep quality and mental health of individuals with traumatic childhood experiences and to prevent the occurrence of emotionally harmful behaviors such as self-harm/suicide.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study, based on socioemotional selectivity theory and cognitive theory, investigates the dynamic and reciprocal relationship between perceived discrimination and cognitive function in later life. METHODS Data were drawn from four waves of the Health and Retirement Study (HRS 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2018). A total of 4,125 people who were 51 and older were included. Cognitive function was measured by the telephone interview for cognitive status (TICS-27). Perceived discrimination was measured using scores of the perceived everyday discrimination scale. Random intercept cross-lagged panel model (RI-CLPM) was utilized. The model was adjusted for a range of covariates. Subgroup analysis by ethnoracial groups was conducted. RESULTS Cross-sectionally, while lower cognitive function was associated with higher perceived discrimination, this relationship was unidirectional. Longitudinally, higher perceived discrimination predicted lower cognitive function in later waves only among non-Hispanic White individuals. CONCLUSION Results suggested that a decline in cognitive function may precede and contribute to the worsening of perceived discrimination, which may result in further decline in cognitive function. Lifetime experience of discrimination was discussed as a possible source of the racial/ethnic variations in the relationship. Further study is needed to examine whether this relationship holds among people with cognitive impairment and dementia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the relationship between cognitive functioning and psychopathological features in Functional/Dissociative Seizures (FDS), and test whether this differs from that observed in epilepsy. METHODS We recruited a cross-sectional sample of adults (age > 18) with a diagnosis of non-lesional epilepsy or FDS between January 2021 and July 2022 (n = 73). Participants completed a series of psychiatric questionnaires and neuropsychological measures. Spearman's Correlation Coefficient was computed between each of the psychiatric and cognitive measures in each group. Fisher's Z test of significance for independent correlation coefficients then tested the significance of the difference between correlation coefficients for the two groups. RESULTS There were no group differences in neuropsychological test scores. However, people with FDS reported higher seizure severity, depression levels, number of medically unexplained somatic symptoms, and exposure to traumatic events compared to epilepsy. Results of the Fisher's Z-test revealed significant differences in correlation coefficients between groups in two instances. First, in the association between the number of traumatic experiences and cognitive switching (z = 2.77, p = 0.006); the number of traumatic experiences were positively associated with cognitive switching in epilepsy but showed a non-significant negative trend in FDS. Secondly, in the association between vocabulary abilities and the number of medically unexplained symptoms (z = -2.71; p = 0.007); higher vocabulary ability was associated with fewer somatic symptoms in epilepsy, while no such correlation was observed in FDS. SIGNIFICANCE This study provides preliminary evidence for the complex interplay between cognitive functioning and psychopathology in FDS and epilepsy. Neurocognitive functioning such as vocabulary abilities or attentional switching may play a role in the expression or maintenance of pathological features of FDS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The complex interplay of the social determinants of health, race/ethnicity, and traditional surgical risk factors on outcomes following metabolic surgery is poorly understood. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the relationship between the social determinants of health as measured by county health ranking (CHR) and short-term metabolic surgery outcomes. SETTING Five accredited bariatric program sites at a national academic health system. METHODS Data were collected from 5 sites of a single health system from 2010 to 2021. Current procedural terminology codes identified primary and revisional cases. Patient characteristics, procedural data, and 30-day occurrences were collected. CHRs for health factors were determined by ZIP Code and stratified into best, middle, and worst terciles. The primary outcome was 30-day complications, readmissions, or reinterventions/reoperations. Logistic regression assessed the correlation between CHR tercile and morbidity. RESULTS We analyzed 4,315 primary and 370 revisional metabolic surgery cases. Overall, 64.0%, 27.4%, and 8.6% of patients lived in the best, middle, and worst CHR terciles, respectively. Patients in the middle and worst CHR terciles were more commonly older; non-Hispanic Black or Hispanic; suffered from preexisting chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or hypertension, were dialysis dependence, were on therapeutic anticoagulation, or had inferior vena cava filters. Middle and worst CHR tercile patients were more likely to undergo index sleeve gastrectomy or robotic-assisted surgery and have surgery performed by a self-designated general surgeon. Thirty-day outcomes were similar across CHR terciles. Racial disparity in multiple short-term outcomes persisted despite adjustment for CHR tercile. CONCLUSION Higher-risk patients are more likely to be from counties with lower CHRs, but CHR was not independently associated with 30-day outcomes after metabolic surgery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Identification of fibromyalgia has been a challenge for healthcare professionals due to the lack of a clinical biomarker. A well-supported integrative hypothesis holds that this condition is a chronic pain problem partly caused by long-term dysregulation of stress response. Therefore, stress assessment from a biopsychosocial perspective may be a useful approach to recognizing fibromyalgia. PURPOSE A cross-sectional case-control study was conducted to explore stress markers from a multidimensional perspective, including heart rate variability (as a biomarker of stress) as well as psychological distress and social stress. METHODS Forty-seven women with fibromyalgia were recruited from support groups and another 47 were recruited as matched pain-free controls. Comparison and discriminant function analyses were performed. RESULTS The data support the goodness of biopsychosocial stress markers in women with fibromyalgia, resulting in the identification of between 70% and 74.5% of fibromyalgia cases (sensitivity) and 85%-87% pain-free controls (specificity), with medium-high levels of fit (λ = 0.58 and λ = 0.59; p < .00). Women with fibromyalgia were characterized by high levels of psychological distress, social stress (disorder levels), and autonomic dysregulation. Although distress and social stress had a greater weight in discriminant functions, dysregulation in terms of low parasympathetic activity and high sympathetic activity at rest was also relevant. CONCLUSIONS A biopsychosocial approach to stress with an objective biomarker such as heart rate variability may be a useful tool to identify and manage FM.

Abstract
Light is essential in shaping human circadian rhythms, including that of the hormone cortisol. While cortisol is known to influence secretion of the cytokine IL-6, the influence of light itself on IL-6 remains unclear. Thus, this study investigated the effects of two light conditions - red and blue - on IL-6 concentrations and the cortisol awakening response in blood. The interplay between cortisol and IL-6 was explored as well. The between-subject experiment was conducted with 71 healthy adult men (aged M red = 24.30, SD = 3.56; M blue = 24.40, SD = 3.51) in a standardized sleep laboratory setting with 60-min light exposure post-awakening at 05:00 a.m. Two mixed models, with light condition and time across measurement points as factors, were calculated. In the one for cortisol, chronotype was introduced as a covariate. Mean cortisol concentrations did not differ between exposure to red vs. blue light (p = 0.443), but overall cortisol output (area under the curve with respect to ground; AUCG) and sensitivity (area under the curve with respect to increase; AUCI) were greater in the blue-light condition (p = 0.050 and p < 0.001, respectively). Additionally, chronotype significantly influenced cortisol concentrations (p = 0.035). As for IL-6, a main effect of time was obtained, with increasing concentrations over time (p = 0.002). Total IL-6 secretion was greater under blue-light exposure (p <. 001), but mean IL-6 concentrations (p = 0.230) and IL-6 sensitivity (p = 0.777) did not differ between the red- and blue-light condition. Mean and total cortisol and IL-6 concentrations were significantly negatively correlated (p = 0.021 and p < 0.001, respectively) during the red-light exposure. In the blue-light condition, cortisol sensitivity was significantly negatively correlated with IL-6 sensitivity (p = 0.034). Overall, blue light seemed to have exerted a greater influence on cortisol and IL-6. For cortisol, this effect might be moderated by chronotype. Additionally, cortisol and IL-6 seem to interact under light exposure. However, these effects were mixed and could not be found consistently across mean secretion, AUCg and AUCi.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim was to investigate psychological risk profiles of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Depression and anxiety have been linked to CVD, but research has not incorporated personality and sex-specific analyses are warranted. In this study, we examine the role of sex, neuroticism, extraversion, anxiety and depression on the risk of CVD. METHOD Using data from the HUNT-study and the mortality register, 32,383 (57.10% men) participants were followed for an average of 10.48 years. During this time, 142 died of myocardial infarction (MI) and 111 of stroke. RESULTS Cox regression showed that depression (HR = 1.07, 95% CI = [1.00, 1.14]) and neuroticism (1.23 [1.08, 1.40]) were significantly related to an increased risk of MI. One standard unit increase in depression and neuroticism was associated with 1.22 [CI 1.01, 1.47] increase and 1.43 [CI 1.14, 0.78] increase in the risk of MI respectively. For stroke, there was no significant effect of anxiety, depression or personality. However, we found a significant interaction effect between sex and extraversion where higher extraversion was associated with greater risk of stroke for women only. CONCLUSIONS Both neuroticism and depression were related to MI. We observed an interaction between extraversion and sex with stroke, but the effect size was small. The role of extroversion as a risk factor for CVD remains inconclusive.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Evidence suggests that lower levels of morning energy are associated with higher levels of stress and lower levels of resilience in patients receiving chemotherapy. Study purposes were to identify subgroups of patients with distinct morning energy profiles; evaluate for differences among the profiles in demographic and clinical characteristics, as well as measures of stress, resilience, and coping. METHODS A total of 1,343 outpatients receiving chemotherapy completed a demographic questionnaire and measures of global, cancer-related, and cumulative life stress, and resilience at study enrollment. Morning energy was assessed using the Lee Fatigue Scale at six time points over two cycles of chemotherapy. Latent profile analysis was used to identify subgroups of patients with distinct morning energy profiles. Differences among the subgroups were evaluated using parametric and nonparametric tests. RESULTS Three morning energy profiles were identified (i.e., High (17.3%), Low (60.3%), Very Low (22.4%)). Compared to High class, the other two morning energy classes were less likely to be employed; had a lower functional status and a higher comorbidity burden; and were more likely to self-report depression and back pain. For all three types of stress, significant differences were found among the three classes with scores that demonstrated a dose response effect (i.e., High < Low < Very Low; as decrements in morning energy increased, stress scores increased). Compared to High class, Very Low class reported higher rates of physical and sexual abuse. The resilience scores exhibited a dose response effect as well (i.e., High > Low > Very Low). Patients with the two worst energy profiles reported a higher use of disengagement coping strategies. CONCLUSIONS Findings highlight the complex relationships among decrements in morning energy, various types of stress, resilience, and coping in patients undergoing chemotherapy. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE Clinicians need to assess for stress and adverse childhood experiences to develop individualized management plans to increase patients' energy levels.

Abstract
Over the past 40 years, the muscarinic acetylcholine receptor family, particularly the M1-receptor and M4-receptor subtypes, have emerged as validated targets for the symptomatic treatment of neurological diseases such as schizophrenia and Alzheimer disease. However, despite considerable effort and investment, no drugs have yet gained clinical approval. This is largely attributable to cholinergic adverse effects that have halted the majority of programmes and resulted in a waning of interest in these G-protein-coupled receptor targets. Recently, this trend has been reversed. Driven by advances in structure-based drug design and an appreciation of the optimal pharmacological properties necessary to deliver clinical efficacy while minimizing adverse effects, a new generation of M1-receptor and M4-receptor orthosteric agonists and positive allosteric modulators are now entering the clinic. These agents offer the prospect of novel therapeutic solutions for 'hard to treat' neurological diseases, heralding a new era of muscarinic drug discovery.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Exposure to social-evaluative threat (SET) can elicit greater physiological responses, including cortisol, compared to non-SET stressors. An individual's level of depressive and anxious symptoms predicts variability in cortisol responses to stressors, and other research suggests that these individual differences may predict vulnerability to social evaluation. The current study integrates both lines of research, testing if there are different relationships between depressive and/or anxious symptoms and cortisol reactivity in the presence or absence of SET. METHODS Healthy undergraduate students ( N = 158, 65% female) were randomly assigned to deliver a speech in the presence (SET) or absence (non-SET) of two evaluators. Salivary cortisol was collected throughout, and self-reported depressive and anxious symptoms were assessed. We hypothesized that in the SET condition, higher levels of depressive and/or anxious symptoms would predict dysregulated cortisol responses compared to lower levels of symptoms and/or assignment to the non-SET group. RESULTS In spite of inconclusive p values (which might be attributed to low statistical power), individuals with high depressive or high anxious symptoms appeared to have exaggerated cortisol responses in the SET condition, as indicated by more concave trajectories. CONCLUSIONS This study suggests that both depression and anxiety could be associated with increased cortisol reactivity to SET.
